About the Artwork
Ito Yuhan’s Sacred Bridge in Nikko (c. 1930) captures the
iconic Shinkyo Bridge, the entrance to Futarasan Shrine in Nikko. Known for its
vibrant red lacquer and stone pillars, the bridge was originally built in 1636
by Tokugawa Iemitsu and reconstructed in 1902 after a flood. Yuhan’s signature
style—printing without black key block outlines—creates a soft, watercolor-like
effect, emphasizing the tranquil and sacred atmosphere of this historic site.
